We have been discovering some of the properties of spaghetti. We used uncooked spaghetti and marshmallows to build towers. We worked together to explore ways to engineer a tall tower that could stand on its own. We had lots of ideas and we learnt that it can be tricky to keep the towers standing tall. We then cooked the spaghetti in hot water to see how it had changed. We think it would be very hard to build a tower with wriggly, sticky, soft spaghetti!

This week all the Year 1 classes went to the Field of Mars Education Centre to learn more about invertebrates. It was very exciting as we walked through the bush with our teachers from the centre. We saw insects and animals in their habitats although we know that many invertebrates are not active in winter when it’s a bit colder. The weather was warm and sunny enough for us so we were busy!

We had fun at the CSIRO light show. We learned lots of interesting things about the light that is all around us.

This week as part of the science unit “Our Senses” we looked at all the things we can see. We made some crazy glasses that could not see, went for an observation walk and then wrote all about it during our writing time.

This week Kindifarm came to visit. Farmer Katrina showed us all the animals and we got to feed them. There were goats, lambs, ducks, chicks, a pig, a rabbit and a calf – that’s a baby cow!

Here we are having lots of fun learning about the animals.

We had a great time!

We all brought in different vegetables and made some creatures. The vegetables were chopped up and we used toothpicks to build our creature. We all had the same vegetables to choose from but we all came up with different ideas!

On Friday we made jelly – our favourite food starting with the letter ‘j’. We started by emptying a packet of jelly crystals into a mixing bowl.

We started a word list so we could remember all the fantastic words we used to describe our jelly.

We poured warm water into the jelly to dissolve the jelly crystals. Warm water works better than cold, because the jelly dissolves faster!

We all got to have a turn stirring the jelly to make sure all those little crystals were dissolved.

With our new visualiser, we can show what is happening on our interactive white board. We love it because it helps us learn.

Once the jelly had dissolved, we all got to try a tiny bit of jelly-water to see what it tasted like.

It was so delicious that we wanted more.

But the rest of the jelly-water had to go into our jelly moulds, so that it could go and set in the fridge.

After lunch (when our jellies had been in the fridge for a few hours) it was time to taste!

We loved eating our jellies!

This week everybody had to cook or make something at home and then tell us all about it. Some children made sandwiches, cakes, mini pizzas, milkshakes, pancakes or toast. Jonathan brought in some jelly and we all had a taste. Renee had enough banana bread to share with everyone. Yeji and Soomin brought in some great pictures to make their presentations more interesting. It’s not easy to talk and share when you are just learning English but they both did a terrific job.

Every day we fill in our weather chart. Is it sunny, cloudy, windy or rainy? Sometimes it’s hard to see from our classroom so we went outside to check. It was very bright and quite warm and we could make shadows with our bodies. We tried lots of different shapes and wherever we went our shadow went too! Can you guess what sort of day it was?
