This week all the Year 1 classes went to the Field of Mars Education Centre to learn more about invertebrates. It was very exciting as we walked through the bush with our teachers from the centre. We saw insects and animals in their habitats although we know that many invertebrates are not active in winter when it’s a bit colder. The weather was warm and sunny enough for us so we were busy!

This week we collected all our small change and brought it to school to make a coin chain. We placed our coins end to end to see how long it would be and we measured it in metres and centimetres. It was tricky because we had to use a 50cm ruler to measure each metre.  All the money collected by our school will go to the Irene Gleason Foundation to support African children.

We have been learning about 3D shapes and we know cylinders, cones, cubes, prisms and pyramids. 3D shapes have faces, edges and vertices-that’s what makes them three dimensional! We have also been learning positional language so that we can follow directions. We looked at our school and suburb using Google maps and practised moving teddies around a  map with a friend.  We drew our own simple map and then created a 3D town.
