We have been discovering some of the properties of spaghetti. We used uncooked spaghetti and marshmallows to build towers. We worked together to explore ways to engineer a tall tower that could stand on its own. We had lots of ideas and we learnt that it can be tricky to keep the towers standing tall. We then cooked the spaghetti in hot water to see how it had changed. We think it would be very hard to build a tower with wriggly, sticky, soft spaghetti!

Year 1 children performed the ‘Monkey King’ for Presentation Day. This is a chinese fable about a naughty monkey king who causes lots of trouble in the kingdom. He upsets the emperor and empress of heaven, their heavenly horses, the fairies and steals the preaches meant for the special peach banquet. Eventually Buddha must intervene to teach the Monkey King a lesson and he is imprisoned in the mountain for 500 years. We practised for many weeks to get it just right and we did a great job on the day!

This week all the Year 1 classes went to the Field of Mars Education Centre to learn more about invertebrates. It was very exciting as we walked through the bush with our teachers from the centre. We saw insects and animals in their habitats although we know that many invertebrates are not active in winter when it’s a bit colder. The weather was warm and sunny enough for us so we were busy!

This week we collected all our small change and brought it to school to make a coin chain. We placed our coins end to end to see how long it would be and we measured it in metres and centimetres. It was tricky because we had to use a 50cm ruler to measure each metre.  All the money collected by our school will go to the Irene Gleason Foundation to support African children.

We have been learning about 3D shapes and we know cylinders, cones, cubes, prisms and pyramids. 3D shapes have faces, edges and vertices-that’s what makes them three dimensional! We have also been learning positional language so that we can follow directions. We looked at our school and suburb using Google maps and practised moving teddies around a  map with a friend.  We drew our own simple map and then created a 3D town.

Spelling can be hard to learn. There are so many things to remember about letters, sounds, patterns and rules. Sometimes you just have to practise over and over to help them stick in your brain. We worked with partners or in small groups to draw a big scribble pattern and filled it up with some of our words. We think if you have to write and write it might as well look good too!

The days  are getting shorter and much cooler because it is the Autumn season. We painted our seasonal trees and used the Patext app to add our thoughts and ideas to our artwork. We showed them to everyone at the K-2 assembly and sang the Autumn song as well.

We like to play games to practise our maths and when we play it makes learning fun. This week we played Egg Oh and Roll and Tally.

Every Friday we can’t wait to go to the hall for our TriSkills gymnastics lesson. We jump, roll, run, balance, skip, swing and even cartwheel! Everybody takes turns and tries hard to do their best and we always have lots of fun! This was our last session for the year and you can see how we’ve improved.

It was a lovely day for our picnic. We met our 4D buddies in the playground for a special recess. Lots of us had brought our bears to school so they could share in the fun too! Our gold coin donations were collected to help the sick children at Westmead Children’s Hospital.
